Am I Building a Tool or an Outcome?

The question started with a tweet.

As software becomes cheaper, value moves toward businesses that deliver end-to-end outcomes.

Most people read that and think:

"AI will kill SaaS."

What stood out to me was something else.

If everyone can build software, software is no longer the moat.

Lately I've been building a marketing automation system.

On screen it's a bunch of nodes wired together.

But that's not what anyone asks for.

A business owner doesn't wake up thinking:

"I need better automation."

They think:

"We're too slow to respond to leads."

Or:

"We're losing opportunities somewhere in the process."

Or simply:

"We need more customers."

The automation is just one way of solving that problem.

That's what I've been thinking about while building this.

A useful question before starting any project is:

Am I building a tool, or am I helping produce an outcome?

The closer you get to the outcome, the harder it becomes to replace what you're doing.

They don't buy automation.

They buy the outcome that automation helps them achieve.
